Winter – Jean-Baptiste Pater

Several figures skate or move across a frozen expanse. In the foreground, a seated woman rides on a sledge pulled by a skater, while a child, a dog and other figures enliven the scene. Bare trees and snow-covered buildings frame the landscape.

Jean-Baptiste Pater painted Winter around 1725. This oval oil on canvas measures 64.8 × 53.8 cm. It belongs to a series devoted to the four seasons, whose decorative function accounts for the painting’s shape.

The work is held by the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya in Barcelona. It entered the museum in 1949 through the Francesc Cambó Bequest and bears inventory number 065008-000.
