This French poster from 1886 advertises daily performances by the Hungarian National Orchestra at the Ambassadeurs, conducted by Farkas Sándor, whose name appears without the accent on the print. The heritage catalogue records the poster as the work of an unidentified artist. It was printed by Charles Lévy, “Affiches américaines,” at 76 rue du Château-d’Eau in Paris.
Eleven musicians pose as a group, two seated in the front row and the others standing. They wear blue-grey braided jackets, red trousers, black boots and feathered caps in a style inspired by hussar uniforms. Several hold violins and one carries a wind instrument. The programme announces concerts during lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by dinner performances from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The large word “Ambassadeurs” appears in white against a red band, positioned between a blue sky, an ochre floor and a pale green information panel.
