Discover the story behind this artwork
Dark Matter is a science poster released in 2020 by NASA’s Exoplanet Exploration Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. It belongs to the Galaxy of Horrors series, styled after vintage horror-film advertising. A fictional giant spider crawls across a glowing purple network beneath the tagline “Something Else Is Out There”.
The web represents the cosmic web: thin filaments of ordinary matter and dark matter connect clusters of galaxies. Dark matter remains invisible and reveals its presence through gravitational effects that help keep stars inside galaxies and galaxies together in clusters. The text notes that the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will investigate its secrets. Credited to NASA/JPL-Caltech, the image is a contemporary science-based illustration, not an astronomical photograph or an original vintage poster.
