James H. Daugherty created this 1919 recruitment poster titled Give the World the Once Over in the United States Navy. The Library of Congress describes it as a 107 × 71 cm colour lithograph printed by the Navy Recruiting Bureau in New York. The line at the bottom directs viewers to apply at a Navy recruiting station.
Beneath the caption “India,” three sailors in white uniforms ride a richly decorated elephant. Other servicemen watch the scene or take photographs, while a ship, stylised architecture, a musician and several figures complete the image. Saturated reds, yellows, blues and greens turn the promise of world travel into a recruitment argument. Its exoticising representation of India is presented here in the context of post-First World War American advertising, rather than as a documentary portrait of the country.
