About Two Maid-Servants at a Brook
Pehr Hilleström painted Two Maid-Servants at a Brook in the 1790s. This 58 × 51 cm oil on canvas is held by Nationalmuseum in Stockholm under inventory number NM 1779.
An outdoor scene of domestic work
Two young women stand beside the water, surrounded by buckets and copper vessels. One kneels over a large tub while the other carries a wooden pail. A rustic fence, reeds and dense trees place their household task within a leafy landscape.
Swedish everyday life through Hilleström’s eyes
A painter and former weaver, Hilleström became one of the leading chroniclers of everyday life in the Gustavian era. This genre scene combines observation of servants at work with a carefully arranged landscape, where pale figures and copper vessels stand out against deep, dark foliage.
