Pollice Verso, painted in 1872 by Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904), depicts the outcome of a gladiatorial contest in a Roman arena. A victorious fighter stands over his fallen opponent and looks towards the stands, where the Vestal Virgins and the crowd signal their verdict.
The Latin title means “with a turned thumb.” Gérôme stages the scene as a spectacle: the action fills the foreground, while the tiers, textiles and architecture form an expansive historical setting. This oil on canvas belongs to the Phoenix Art Museum collection under object number 1968.52.
