The Print Collector by Honoré Daumier
In a print shop, a man in a top hat and long pale coat stands before displayed sheets and portfolios placed on the floor. Light falls across the prints while the visitor remains largely in shadow, focusing the scene on the collector’s attentive gaze.
A collecting scene from around 1860
The Art Institute of Chicago holds this painting under the title The Print Collector. Its record dates the work to about 1860 and identifies it as oil on cradled panel. Daumier uses the figure of the collector to observe a social type of his time while keeping attention on the quiet act of looking.
