About The Night
Sotheby’s catalogues La Nuit as an oil on canvas by Jean-Louis Hamon, signed “J. L. HAMON”, inscribed “CAPRI” and dated 1866 at lower right. The work measures 41.2 × 31.4 cm.
Two figures carried through the sky
Two young women with closed eyes travel together through a night sky. Their bodies and pale drapery form a rising diagonal. A winged Cupid stands behind them and joins their movement.
An unusual allegory of night
A few stars punctuate the blue-black background. Skin, blond hair and pale fabrics emerge from the darkness. The sale catalogue notes that this imagery departs from the usual personification of Night.
