About The Lesson
Dorotheum catalogues this work by Johann Baptist Reiter under the German title Die Unterrichtsstunde, translated as The Lesson. The oil on canvas measures 63 × 50 cm. Specialist Lothar Schultes confirmed its authenticity from a photograph.
Two young girls sharing a reading lesson
A girl dressed in pink places an arm around a seated child and points to a printed sheet on a wooden reading stand. The younger girl, dressed in dark colours, folds her hands on the table and follows the indicated line. Their closely grouped faces organise the scene.
Details of the interior
Warm light concentrates on the faces, hands and sheet. A dark curtain closes the background, while a green-and-red decorated book lies at lower right. Gesture and gaze make the learning moment immediately legible.
