About Ophelia’s Death

Ophelia’s Death, made around 1781 by British artist Mary Hoare, is held by the Yale Center for British Art as accession B1975.4.1975. This work on paper combines watercolour, gouache, black ink, scraping and graphite. The sheet measures 56.9 × 44.3 cm.

Ophelia beside the stream

Hoare does not show Ophelia’s body floating after death. The young woman is still beside the water beneath a large tree, raising the flower garland in her hands towards a branch. Her dress and veil sweep upwards above the dark current, reinforcing the precarious movement of the scene.

A scene inspired by Hamlet

The subject comes from Queen Gertrude’s account in Act IV, Scene 7 of Hamlet: Ophelia tries to hang her flower garlands from a willow before falling into the brook. Brown and grey washes, touches of blue and the diagonal tree trunk focus the composition on the moment immediately before the tragedy.
