The Snake Charmer, painted around 1879 by Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904), shows a nude young performer holding a snake coiled around his body. A musician plays a flute to his right, while a group of armed men watches before a wall covered with blue tiles and inscriptions.
The Clark Art Institute catalogue explains that this space does not document a single location: Gérôme combined tiles inspired by Topkapı Palace in Istanbul with a floor recalling the Mosque of Amr in Cairo. The painting should therefore be considered within the history of nineteenth-century European Orientalist representation, rather than read as a faithful record of an Ottoman scene.
