About Saint Peter Healing the Sick
Held by the National Museum in Warsaw as M.Ob.1660, Saint Peter Healing the Sick is an oil on canvas by Jacob Toorenvliet. The museum dates it to the third quarter of the seventeenth century, between 1650 and 1675. The work measures approximately 49 × 40 cm.
Saint Peter among the sick
Saint Peter stands at the centre in blue with an ochre cloak. His open hand directs attention towards the seated and reclining figures around him. Stone architecture and a large red curtain enclose the scene.
A tightly grouped, contrasting composition
The bodies overlap across the foreground of the vertical format. Blues, ochres and pale flesh tones emerge from brown shadows, while an opening to the sky at upper left provides a second area of light.
