Napoleon in Egypt, painted in 1867–1868 by Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904), depicts Bonaparte outside Cairo on a road lined with fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Mamluk mausoleums. Dressed as a general of the French Revolution, he stands alone before the funerary architecture and an expansive sky.
The scene refers to the Egyptian campaign launched in 1798. Gérôme shows Napoleon before the French naval defeat at the Battle of the Nile. Painted under the Second Empire, decades after the events, the work constructs a retrospective image of the conqueror among the tombs of former Mamluk rulers.
