Kandinsky’s Painting with a Red Spot: colour as a focal point

This reproduction of Painting with a Red Spot by Wassily Kandinsky presents a work dated 25 February 1914, held in the Centre Pompidou collection. Within its square format, a large red area draws the eye towards the upper left. Around it, yellows, blues, pinks and greens create a space crossed by dark lines.

Red at the heart of a painting in motion

The red spot stands out through its relatively clear outline and strong colour. It contrasts with the more fragmented passages elsewhere in the image. On the right, a dark centre holds a cluster of small coloured shapes; below, blue and pink curves unfold against a luminous background. Black strokes pass between these areas, inviting the eye to change direction.

The Centre Pompidou highlights the role of the double arc linking the two focal areas in the upper part of the painting. It also relates the effects of transparency and spreading colour to painting on glass. These observations encourage us to look beyond the spot that gives the work its name.

A 1914 abstraction to compare with other works

The original is a square oil painting on canvas measuring 130 × 130 cm. It entered the museum’s collection through Nina Kandinsky’s donation in 1976. These measurements refer to the original painting; the reproduction’s size can be selected from the options on this product page.

To explore a different distribution of colour, discover Kandinsky’s Yellow-Red-Blue. Our reproduction of On White II offers another encounter between coloured shapes, black lines and light spaces. Continue the comparison with our article on Yellow-Red-Blue and Kandinsky’s visual language.

A square composition for a colourful interior

This image can serve as a focal point in a living room, hallway or study. A light wall brings out its colours and outlines, while simple furniture helps its many details remain visible. A few touches of red or blue can create continuity with the rest of the room.
