About Saint Jerome

Painted around 1621, Saint Jerome is an oil on canvas by Hendrick ter Brugghen in the Cleveland Museum of Art. The elderly saint, wrapped in a dark cloak, rests his head on one hand and points with the other to an open book bearing a skull.

Book, skull and penitence

The museum once identified the figure as the philosopher Heraclitus because of his tears. The absence of a globe and the presence of the book and skull led to the identification as Saint Jerome, translator of the Bible into Latin. His tears intensify the theme of penitence.

Ter Brugghen’s light

Light entering from the left shapes the face, hands, worn pages and skull while the background remains almost entirely dark. This dramatic contrast reflects the Caravaggesque language that ter Brugghen developed after his years in Italy.
