Edvard Munch’s The Scream: the 1895 pastel version
A pale-faced figure holds its hands to its head beneath a sky streaked with red and orange. This art print of The Scream by Edvard Munch reproduces the 1895 pastel version. The slanting railing, curved landscape and open mouth create an image whose lines seem to extend the figure’s emotion.
A motif explored in several versions
Munch returned to the motif of The Scream several times. The image shown here corresponds to the 1895 pastel on paper mounted on board, documented during its exhibition at New York’s Museum of Modern Art in 2012–2013. It differs from the 1893 painted version held by Norway’s National Museum.
Recognising the version draws attention to its particular qualities: the vivid orange sky, the blue and green passages of the landscape and the visible pastel strokes. The subject remains recognisable, while its colours and details change from one version to another.
Lines that contrast depth with movement
The railing and path lead from the foreground towards the two distant figures on the left. Their straight lines contrast with the undulating sky, water and central figure. The hands frame the face, while the dark clothing gives the body a narrow, winding shape.
Reds and yellows fill the upper part of the image; deeper blues gather around the fjord and the figure. To explore another treatment of this landscape and of unease in Munch’s work, discover our art print of Despair.
A striking image for an uncluttered wall
The intense palette can become a focal point in an office, living room or creative space. Simple surroundings let the sky and figure stand out without competing colour accents. Choose a size that lets you appreciate the drawn marks as well as the composition as a whole. Explore other subjects and moods in our collection of Edvard Munch art prints.
