Plate 13 Two rays, a lanternfish, a monkfish, and a unicorn fish: An invitation to emotion
The Plate 13 Two rays, a lanternfish, a monkfish, and a unicorn fish stands out as a marine scene of almost naturalist precision, where each creature seems captured in a suspended moment. The curves of the rays, the prickly texture of the unicorn fish, and the translucent shine of the lanternfish create a rhythmical composition, alternating solids and voids with graphic elegance. The palette favors earthy tones and nacreous accents that convey oceanic strangeness, while the finesse of the line recalls the work of an illuminator. This art print of the Plate 13 invites contemplation, offering an atmosphere both scientific and poetic that captures and moves.
Joris Hoefnagel, master of naturalist Mannerism
Joris Hoefnagel, Flemish painter and illuminator of the late 16th century, distinguished himself by his ability to marry scientific observation with artistic sensitivity. Coming from a tradition of naturalist illustration, he contributed to the rise of naturalist studies in Europe through his meticulous and decorative plates. Influenced by Mannerist ornamentation and the curiosity cabinets of his time, Hoefnagel left behind famous works that blend visual rhetoric and naturalist knowledge. This art print of Plate 13 bears witness to his keen eye for detail and his skill in transforming biological detail into a work of art, close to scientific collections and erudite cabinets.
