About Peace Concluded

Painted by John Everett Millais in 1856, Peace Concluded marks the end of the Crimean War through a contemporary family scene. The oil on canvas measures 116.8 × 91.4 cm and is held by the Minneapolis Institute of Art.

News of peace enters the home

A wounded officer, returned from Crimea, rests beside his wife and their two daughters. He holds the 31 March 1856 issue of The Times, opened to the announcement of the Treaty of Paris. His wife places an arm around him, while a large Irish wolfhound appears behind the children.

Toys turned into political symbols

The Noah’s Ark animals represent the powers involved in the war: the British lion, Russian bear, French rooster and Ottoman turkey. One girl presents a dove carrying an olive branch, a symbol of peace, while the other holds her father’s military medal.
