Peter van de Velde, master of the marine landscape
Peter van de Velde's art is part of the great Dutch maritime tradition, where topographical precision and a sense of decor blend with keen pictorial sensitivity. Active in the 16th–17th centuries, Peter van de Velde draws inspiration from maritime exchanges and Mediterranean ports to compose scenes that celebrate navigation and commerce. Influenced by his Flemish and Dutch contemporaries, he masters the depiction of water and changing skies, giving his works poetic realism.
