Goddess Jagadhatri — Calcutta Art Studio

Goddess Jagadhatri: an Indian print in deep reds

This reproduction of Goddess Jagadhatri by Calcutta Art Studio shows a four-armed figure seated on a lion before snow-covered mountains. Her red garment fills the centre of the image. Its folds stand out against the grey sky and peaks, while jewellery, a crown and golden borders add small highlights. The eye moves from the goddess’s face to the lion’s, turned towards the viewer.

The green cloth on the mount balances the dominant red. Foreground rocks, clouds and the lion’s long tail bring movement to the vertical composition. The light margin retains the title and Calcutta Art Studio imprint. These inscriptions contribute to the image’s character and recall its printed origins.

Jagadhatri and religious imagery from Calcutta

The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds a print matching this composition, dated 1878–1883 and described as a lithograph with watercolour on paper. The museum identifies Jagadhatri as a gentle form of Durga-Kali. Her name means “Bearer of the World.” The mountain setting evokes Mount Kailash, associated with Shiva. This image belongs to a Hindu religious tradition; its subject deserves as much attention as its colours and ornament.

Calcutta Art Studio is the designer and publisher named on the sheet, rather than an individual painter. Our Calcutta Art Studio reproduction collection brings together further compositions from this visual world. Historical details refer to the original print; the item offered on this page is a reproduction.

Pair this print with other goddesses from the same collection

An off-white wall or dark wood can complement the reds, greens and browns. Leave space around the frame so the silhouette and inscriptions remain easy to see. The vertical composition suits a narrow wall or a group of images hung at the same height.
