About the artwork

Discover the story behind this artwork

For a richer, fuller life — Wake up and read is an American poster created in New York in 1961 for National Library Week, held April 16–22. The Library of Congress preserves the original in its Artist Poster Filing Series. Neither the artist nor the publisher is identified. The colour print measures 57 × 43 cm and carries call number POS - US .N38, no. 1.

The design shows a reader in profile holding an open book. A turquoise line travels from the page through the figure’s eye, forms a loop and then drops as an arrow toward a red heart. This visual path directly connects reading, sight and inner life. The word “READ” fills the lower section in large blue letters, with “WAKE UP AND” placed inside the R. The upper slogan promises a “richer, fuller life,” while the campaign dates appear along the bottom edge.
