About Aline, Family Album
Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta painted Aline, Family Album around 1890. This oil on canvas, signed at the upper right, measures 81 × 65 cm. It depicts Aline Masson, the artist’s favourite model in late nineteenth-century Paris.
A portrait among photographs
Reclining in a blue armchair, Aline looks through an album open across her lap and holds a small photograph in her right hand. The black-and-white photographic portraits contrast with the vivid colours of her clothes, pink ribbons and the red flowers tucked into her hair.
The skill of a cosmopolitan painter
Madrazo combines precise handling in the face and hands with freer strokes across the white fabric and brown background. The blue chair frames the figure, while her tilted pose gives the scene a relaxed character. These textures and colours exemplify the refinement that brought the Spanish painter success in Paris.
