About Milkmaid in the Barn
In this nineteenth-century rural interior, a young woman walks forward carrying a wooden-hooped milk pail. Tubs, lids, jugs, a skimmer and vegetables around her give a concrete account of domestic farm work.
An Austrian genre scene
Light entering from the right catches the white blouse, pail and vessels, while the rafters and the rear of the barn remain in shadow. The calm figure, shown in the middle of her task, anchors the vertical composition.
Ignaz Raffalt and rural life
Ignaz Raffalt (1800–1857) was a nineteenth-century Austrian painter trained in the circle of the Vienna Academy. His early rural genre scenes drew on Old Dutch models; he later concentrated increasingly on landscape and changing effects of weather and light.
