Louis-Isidore Duperrey, master of travel narrative
Louis-Isidore Duperrey, naval officer and French explorer of the early 19th century, left a lasting mark on the iconography of scientific expeditions. Leading the circumnavigation from 1822 to 1825, he contributed to mapping, species collection, and the publication of remarkable plates blending rigor and attention to detail. Influenced by the Enlightenment spirit and the needs of learned societies of his time, Duperrey was able to turn observation into imagery: his plates serve today as historical witnesses as well as works of art.
