A carefully observed fish study
This reproduction of Argentina elongata by Frank Edward Clarke shows an elongated fish facing left against a cream background. Its large eye, fine rows of scales and fin rays give the drawing its precision. Subtle silvery greys and a forked tail emphasise the horizontal outline. Notes and a small diagram above the fish reveal the image’s documentary purpose.
An illustration rooted in natural history
Clarke devoted much of his work to observing fish. Te Papa holds his illustrations and describes their connection to his natural-history research. The handwritten name Argentina Decagon beneath this fish is a synonym of Argentina elongata. It explains why the label in the image differs from the reproduction’s title.
A quiet addition to a study or reading room
The pale tones suit a library, office or room with maritime accents. Pair this fish with other Clarke studies to compare outlines, fins and colours. Emmelichthys nitidus and the spectacled triplefin, from the same collection, offer two complementary natural-history subjects.
