A Nativity gathered around the cradle
In this reproduction, every gaze leads to the Child in a wooden cradle. On the left Mary lifts the white cloth; on the right the visitors lean forward with clasped hands. Blue-green fabric, red sleeves and brown garments bring colour to the warm interior. Wooden boards, masonry and an animal in the shadows give the stable a tangible presence.
A painting of 1665 at the Mauritshuis
Jan de Bray painted this oil on panel in 1665. The original is in the collection displayed at the Mauritshuis in The Hague. The Haarlem artist worked in portraiture as well as historical and religious painting. Here, expressive faces and small gestures bring the biblical scene close to the viewer.
Displaying this art print
The vertical composition suits a narrow wall or a group of old master prints. A simple wooden frame can echo the browns of the setting, while a pale wall emphasises the contrasts. Pair it with the other religious paintings by Jan de Bray below to build a coherent display.
