A Vase of Flowers — Margareta Haverman

A Vase of Flowers: Haverman’s abundant bouquet

Pale flowers catch the light among red and orange blooms, fine stems and broad leaves. A striped tulip stands out near the top. Below, grapes extend the arrangement beyond the vase and give the composition another point of interest.

The dark background defines the bouquet’s outline. Open petals, buds and smaller blossoms overlap without merging. Blue-toned leaves contrast with the fruit and warmer colours, rewarding both a distant view and close observation.

A 1716 still life at The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Met identifies the original as oil on wood, dated 1716. It explains that fading yellow pigment has left some foliage looking bluer today. The bouquet also combines flowers that bloom in different seasons: it is a painted arrangement rather than a direct record of a naturally available bouquet.

In a dining room, living room or reading corner, a light wall can emphasize the dark background. Small blue-green or cream accents echo the image. Leave room to appreciate the whole bouquet as well as its petals and grapes.
