Plate 70: A roach surrounded by insects: An invitation to emotion
The art print Plate 70: A roach surrounded by insects stands out as a meticulous scene where nature reveals itself in its smallest details. The composition draws the eye to a small roach, surrounded by a profusion of finely drawn insects, each wing and scale rendered with almost scientific precision. The delicate tones, alternating beiges, greens, and ochres, create an atmosphere that is both peaceful and strange, like a natural history showcase. The technique, inherited from the miniaturists of the Golden Age, offers subtle relief through shadows and touches of light. This art print Plate 70: A roach surrounded by insects captures the intimacy of the living world and evokes a contemplative emotion.
Joris Hoefnagel, master of detail and late Renaissance
