The man rests his cheek in an open hand, his fingers reaching towards his temple. A pipe extends to the right, followed by a thin violet trail of smoke. Restless black strokes define the moustache, facial creases and clothing. Small red and blue accents animate the beige background and give the face an immediate presence.

Expressive charcoal drawing

Dated around 1930 in the Ketterer catalogue, Portrait of a Dockworker is drawn in charcoal and coloured chalk. Elfriede Lohse-Wächtler builds volume through hatching, overlapping lines and smudged passages. The sideways glance and supporting hand hold attention without a distracting setting. Towards the bottom, the open outlines leave space for the background.

Displaying this reproduction

The black strokes and paper tones suit a pale wall, natural wood or a group of drawings. Its vertical format works within a portrait arrangement in a study or living room. Compare the face with Two Brothers and Self-Portrait in Fantastic Company, two more works by the artist in the same Portrait collection.

Two more works by Lohse-Wächtler

Self-Portrait in Fantastic Company · Two Brothers

Explore the Portrait collection

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0773/1707/9365/files/Elfriede_LohseWchtler_-_Portrt_eines_Hafenarbeiters_cadre.webp?v=1755972544
